DescriptionThis section comprises wide-ranging records from Poole's several courts. These include Quarter Sessions papers dating from 1585 to 1971; records of the Admiralty Court covering 1568 to 1834; records of the Sheriff's Court, 1571-1840; a series of Coroner's inquests for the period 1589-1884; court papers from the Court of Record, 1607-1844, the Clerk of the Market's Court Book, 1649-1651, and records thought to have derived from meetings of the Petty Sessions, 1702-1885. The section also contains a number of records relating to Assizes, Sessions of Oyer and Terminer and various judicial records of mixed or unidentified origin.

Little original order has survived in the records of Poole's courts. This is particularly true of the Quarter Sessions, where original bundles collated for particular sessions of the peace have been long since broken apart and records rearranged by record type. Similar can be said for the Petty Sessions, which records have for some years been maintained in order by nature of offense rather than chronology or session.
