DescriptionDame Mary Bankes (nee Hawtrey) was the daughter of Ralph Hawtrey (1570-1638) and Mary Altham (21 Dec 1578- 1647) of Ruislip, Middlesex. John Bankes married Mary Bankes on 21 May 1618. They had 14 children:

Ralph Bankes (25 Nov 1631-1677) - married Mary Brune (c1646-1711) on 10 Apr 1661

Dame Mary Bankes is often credited as 'Brave Dame Mary' who withstood two seiges of Corfe Castle during the Civil War. There is little evidence in the records within this collection that she was present, certainly at the second siege.
