DescriptionRecords relating to Sir John Bankes (1589-1644). Born in Keswick, Cumbria, John Bankes studied at Oxford, and became an M.P. and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He invested in mines in Cumberland in 1622, before buying the lands and estates of Corfe Castle from Lady Elizabeth Coke in 1635, and then the estates of Kingston Lacy in 1636. John Bankes married Mary Hawtrey on 21 May 1618.

They had 14 children:

Sir John Bankes' father was also called John Bankes (b.1569), which is why Sir John was also known as John Bankes II.
